Midtown Moderne
1740 Broadway reinvents the "office" for the next generation of workers as a luxury hospitality environment. Imagine all the amenities of a hotel servicing offices in lieu of hotel rooms. The way we work today has changed radically with mobile computing. Our homes are becoming more like our offices, and our offices are becoming more like our homes. Fashioning an office building amenity program that feels like a residential-inspired hotel and a lot less like your parent's corporate headquarters was the game-changing mandate of this project. Today's midtown workforce is now a robust multi-generational one that includes creative and corporate sectors. Established professionals mingle with innovative start-ups in an environment with as many formal Wingtip dress shoes as casual Red Wing boots. Wingtips and Red Wings, if you will. This midtown office building opened in 1950 and was designed by the architect of the Empire State Building. It is an excellent example of early mid-century "Streamline Moderne" architecture (a subset of the Art Deco) characterized by strong horizontal lines and sweeping, curving forms. Luxurious and yet informal modernism became the expressive idiom of the project. Warm materials are presented in a raw and relaxed manner. The forms are clear, "streamlined" and geometric. The surfaces are all tactility and depth. Spaces flow with curvaceous calm. There is an atmosphere of formal ease throughout A down-to-earth-deco. 1740 Broadway has been developed as a gathering place with the DNA of a hospitality environment dedicated to life and works for today's innovator.
