Farm to Moderne
Sometimes opposites attract. Five Acres is Chef Greg Baxtrom's fourth restaurant and bar in New York City. This eatery brings the chef’s down-to-earth, farm-to-table approach to Rockefeller Center. Located beneath the 30 Rock plaza and directly behind Prometheus on the ice skating rink plaza level, this restaurant and bar is the centerpiece of the new Rock Center food and beverage program, which is intended to showcase emerging culinary talent in this glamorous midtown setting. Five Acres is an interior “open-air” restaurant without walls and was designed to take its place among the great hub restaurants of NYC, like Grand Central’s Oyster Bar. Unlike the restaurants throughout the center behind INC-designed storefronts, Five Acres will live openly within the newly renovated concourse designed by INC as its most public and democratic eatery. Having been developed as a mash-up of fine dining, diner, and sidewalk cafe restaurant idioms, Five Acres defies categorization. Formal and casual elements paint a picture of the unlikely marriage of farm-to-table cuisine in a modern art-deco environment rooted in the context of Rockefeller Center. A hanging garden encircling the entire restaurant ceiling brings the landscaping of the Rockefeller plaza into the rink concourse. Flowing streamlined forms, Marcel Breuer's iconic Cesca cantilever chair, dark, highly figured cerused woodwork, dark and light marbles, leather, cream-colored plaster, bronze metalwork, and ribbed glass bring a high modernist tone to the space. While deep banquettes, cafe rails, and tables refer to American diners and Parisian sidewalk cafes. A private dining room is lined with William Morris-inspired naturalist wallcovering made entirely of photographs of Upstate NY flora, completing the picture of a rough and lux mash-up. The strange bedfellows of a locally grown Michelin star chef and a beloved NY Art Deco landmark campus create a uniquely contemporary hybrid of farm-to-table moderne located in the heart of Rockefeller Center in the middle of Manhattan island.
