Pre-War Redux
This Carnegie Hill residence is in a handsome pre-war building erected in 1925 with views of central park. The owners wanted this extensive gut renovation to be “light, aerie, restrained, uncluttered, peaceful, appropriate to the “Pre-War” context and grown-up without becoming dowdy or predictable.” She hoped this mandate could be balanced with an “atmosphere of creativity” and “just a little bit of luxury.” He wanted the home to be comfortable and low maintenance. Simple custom trims of a single profile were provided throughout, referencing the historical context but remaining abstractly modern in their simplicity. The light Farrow & Ball paint colors that shift tonally from room to room were selected for their neutral “faded” character to lend an old-world atmosphere. These colors, neither pastel nor bold, lend the apartment a luminous and peaceful modern grandeur when combined with the uniquely bleached walnut floors. In this eclectic residence, the gold fixtures, the contemporary upholstery shapes, the custom Forte Street Studio rugs, the Carlos de la Puente Baguès chandeliers, the gold leaf, the white pony skin, the rabbit fur pillows, the Osborne & Little hand-painted silk fabrics, and the antiqued silk velvets all owe a debt to the turn of the century is decidedly 21st-century renditions.
