INC Architecture & Design's design for the Hotel X is a tribute to the theatrical, artistic, and cultural history of Union Square — a site adjacent to the original Tammany Hall n New York's first theater district. The concept positions the hotel as a "praise poem to the theater of life," where guests move fluidly between roles of audience and actor. The design explores paired dualities rooted in the site: the Beaux Arts building against the organic park, downtown café society against the public square's street culture, and the historic theater district against Andy Warhol's Factory-era creative chaos. Spatially, the guest journey is structured like a three-act play ("The Grid Shifts"): The Marquee — the lobby/entrance, blending glamour with street energy The House — main social spaces, mixing café culture with an artist's-studio informality The Backstage — guest suites, offering an intimate, VIP-lounge-meets-boudoir atmosphere A companion set of material and mood strategies ("Union Square's Rebel Scene") translates these ideas into tactile direction — patinated metals, marble, velvet, terrazzo, and neon — organized under themes like Tactile Materiality, Clean Maximalism, and Form Follows Fantastic, each tied back to specific historical touchstones like the Germania Life Building and the neighborhood's theater heritage. The result is a hospitality concept built on contrast: uptown polish meeting downtown edge, and formality meeting theatrical spontaneity.
