Sister Act
Bringing to life the modernist collection of two extraordinary sisters, this exhibition for the Jewish Museum was designed to balance three distinct narratives: the presentation of masterworks, archival ephemera, and the home in which these objects were lovingly kept and displayed. "Collecting Matisse and Modern Masters: The Cone Sisters of Baltimore features over 50 of these works of art—including paintings, sculptures, and works on paper by Matisse, Picasso, Gauguin, Renoir, van Gogh, Pissarro, Courbet, and more. In addition to modern masterpieces, the exhibition includes textiles and decorative arts from Europe, Asia, and Africa that the Cones collected, as well as photographs and archival materials to highlight the remarkable lives of these two sisters". The masterworks are presented in white wall galleries, and ephemera are marked with a rich red, a dominant color in their original home and the sisters' favorite. Transparent scrims throughout were printed with larger-than-life views of their residences showing the masterworks, on display beyond, in their original disposition, along with actual photographs of this remarkable collection as it was displayed in their home. A life surrounded by art in a dreamlike installation that captures the spirit and passion of two of the twentieth century's greatest patrons.
