Contemporary Art and Design for Jewish Life

Reinventing Ritual: Contemporary Art and Design for Jewish Life is the first international exhibition to survey Jewish rituals as an important contemporary art and design experimentation site since the 1990s. Inspired by the inventive character of the works and the endemic themes of the nomadic and temporary, while also satisfying the programmatic requirement that the show would travel to several major American cities, the entire show was fabricated of flat pack plywood structures. Titles, text panels, platforms, plinths, vitrines, and partitions were all designed as a demountable flat pack or leaning elements without mechanical fasteners. Nearly sixty groundbreaking works in diverse media, from jewelry to video to architecture, by 58 leading artists reveal the intersections of creative freedom and ethical practice. These works are defined by the urge to discover beauty and meaning in first premises. This attitude of innovation is shared by a wide range of artists and designers who focus on Judaism as a lived experience by transforming the physical acts of ritual into new forms.
