The Italian Job
Chef Alfred Portale describes himself as an Italian American who is “French-trained." He was a pioneer in the New American cuisine movement and is known for his exquisite plating and insistence on high-quality ingredients. The eponymously named Portale restaurant combines sleek metropolitan modernity with homespun comfort. It reflects the refinement of his approach and the casual warmth of a neighborhood favorite. INC has delicately combined raw material like limed whitewashed reclaimed timber, bleached white oak, and painted white raw brick with meticulously crafted details in super-refined finishes like brass, black lacquer, teal leather, mohair calacatta arabescato marble, and burled walnut. A combination of the rough and the refined, reflecting the elegance of “la Cucina raffinata” and the relaxed comfort of a home-cooked meal. INC has combined the urbane and gritty glamour of Milan in the mid-century and the hominess of your nonna’s kitchen. Portale is a little bit Sophia Loren and a little bit Anna Magnan.
