The Kitchen as Theater

Super Peach embodies David Chang’s culinary philosophy in a fully immersive architectural environment. Located in Los Angeles, the restaurant reflects Chang’s Korean-American identity, classical French training, and formative experiences in Japan, combining precision with chaos, restraint with irreverence. His concept of “Blade Runner food”—a fusion of high and low, elegant and raw—manifests here in a space shaped by the theater of culinary performance and the democratic energy of classic diners. The spatial design follows a dual logic. Horizontally, it references the flow of a theater-in-the-round with a permitter lined in booth seating, circulation, dining counters and bars. Vertically, it builds engagement through the foundation of bars and booths, an eye-level zone of chef, bartender and open kitchen interactions, and finally an upper register of storage and back-lit “drops” or canopies. A fully exposed kitchen line turns the act of cooking into an open performance, visible the moment guests arrive. A disciplined material palette—comprising tile, plywood, concrete, and stainless steel—supports a bold color strategy: everything below counter height is rendered in pale green, anchoring the space; everything above is in saturated orange and natural Industrial plywood, injecting heat and texture. Green-stained plywood and gray-green concrete floors unify surfaces, while soft lighting, the interior mesh canopies, and a reflective stainless-steel wall bring depth, scale, and warmth. The design extends visually and spatially outside. A fluid overhead mesh canopy defines an outdoor room where color and materials strategies flow seamlessly from interior to exterior, ensuring continuity and accessibility. Super Peach is expressive, saturated, and socially charged. It is less a backdrop and more a stage—an architectural translation of Chang’s hybrid cuisine, balancing intensity and invitation, tradition and invention.
