The Treadwell
The Treadwell, located at 249 East 62nd, sits at the intersection of Midtown and the Upper East Side. The contextual design for the façade and the interiors aims to blend elements of both neighborhoods. The cool modernism of Art Deco Midtown towers such as The Chrysler Building is enriched and warmed by the rusticated textures of the Romanesque residences of the Upper East Side such as the works of Rosario Candela at One Sutton Place, 834 Fifth Ave, 2 East 67th Street, and 960 Fifth Ave. The central verticality of the façade, complemented by flanking horizontal bands, is indebted to the residential Art Deco towers of Manhattan such as The Ardsley, The Majestic, and The Century. An “undecorated deco” aesthetic borrows the overall formal strategies of Art Deco but is executed here without the associated decorative excess. Thus, offering a contemporary take on a decidedly New York tradition, that is at once modern and richly warm. Fluted terracotta panels clad the façade and are framed by bronze metal bands bringing an artisan touch that offsets the machine-made metal. A basket weave of horizontally and vertically oriented fluted limestone-colored terracotta panels anchor the corners of the four facades of the tower and the base facing 2nd Avenue. Vertically oriented fluted terracotta panels mark the central zone of these facades. In this central zone, bronze bands trace up the building and terminate in curved ribbons that meet on the roof emphasizing the vertical proportions of the tower. The 360-degree penthouse apartment resides at the cruciform intersection of these vertical elements.
